Instructions for Authors

The Spanish Economic Review accepts submissions of original papers in English. Papers submitted to the review cannot be under editorial process in another journal.

  • The length of the paper should be about 20 typeset pages, and not exceed 30 typeset pages. Authors are encouraged to move dispensable materials to appendices that can be made available in the Data/Code archive as "Supplementary Materials" and hyperlinked to the published paper.

  • As much as possible, avoid footnotes as they distract readers from the main text; short footnotes for few bibliographic references should be especially avoided.

  • In Tables and Figures, choose units judiciously to avoid leading zeros and maximize the informational content of the digits shown.

  • If you use (La)TeX, you are encouraged to use Springer’s general LaTeX macro package, especially in the later stages of the editorial process.

  • Useful references for preparing manuscripts that others may gladly read include:

McCloskey, D.N. (1987) The Writing of Economics (New York NY: Macmillan).

Salant, Walter S. (1969) "Writing and Reading in Economics," Journal of Political Economy 77(4-1): 545-558.

Data/Replication Policy

The central methodology by which science operates is peer review and reproducibility. Consequently, authors are expected to provide whatever material is needed to ensure that their results can be replicated.

This material might include datasets (sometimes instructions on how to access third-party datasets, accompanied by a proper description of what was used in the paper will suffice), computer programs (sometimes a detailed description of algorithms will suffice), technnical appendices, supplementary tables and proofs, etc.

For accepted papers, these items will be deposited in electronic form onto the Spanish Economic Review's Data/Code Archive. Authors are encouraged to read the information for users of the Review's Data/Code Archive carefully before submitting papers.

2. Editorial procedure

The Editors reserve the right to return to the authors any manuscript that in their opinion is not suitable for publication in Spanish Economic Review, without expressly stipulating the reasons for doing so. Under no circumstances the identity of the reviewers and referees will be disclosed to the authors, or to any other third party.

In order to speed up the reviewing process, authors are invited to make online submissions.

3. Manuscript preparation

Form and content of the manuscript of the accepted paper should be carefully checked to exclude the need for later corrections.

Title page. The title page should include:

- The name(s) of the author(s)

- A concise and informative title

- The affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s)

- The e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers of the communicating author

Abstract. Each paper must be preceded by an abstract presenting the most important results and conclusions in no more than 100 words

Keywords/JEL Classification. Three to five keywords should be supplied after the Abstract for indexing purposes. In addition an appropriate number of JEL Classification codes should be provided.

Equations, calculations, and mathematical proofs. Number consecutively only those equations that are referenced in the text. Indent equations and place numbers in parentheses at the right margin. Type equations clearly with one space before and after mathematical function signs except in subscripts and superscripts. Type the main components, the equal sign, and the fraction bar on the main line of typing. Write on one line mathematical expressions used within a paragraph.

In results of calculations, keep number of significant digits constant, not exceeding four; adjust scale to eliminate multiple leading zeroes.

Long mathematical proofs should appear in an appendix. The main body of the text should focus on the thrust, structure and economic intuition of the argumentation.

Acknowledgements. These should be as brief as possible. Any grant that requires acknowledgement should be mentioned. The names of funding organizations should be written in full.

References. The list of References should only include works that are cited in the text and that have been published or accepted for publication. Personal communications should only be mentioned in the text.

A paper published online but not yet in print can be cited using the Digital Object Identifier (DOI). If available, the DOI can also be added at the end of references already published.

Examples:

Journals: names and initials of all authors; year in parentheses; full title of paper cited; short title of journal; boldface volume number; first and last page numbers; DOI, if applicable.

Lau L (1996) Duality and the structure of utility functions. Journal of Economic Theory 1:374-396

Books: names and initials of all authors; year; full title; edition; publisher; place of publication

Fudenberg D, Tirole J (1991) Game Theory. MIT Press, Cambridge, MA

In the text as well as in footnotes, references should be cited by author and year (e.g. Lau (1996); Alon and McKee (2006); Resnick et al. (2002)). They should be listed in alphabetical order in the reference list.

Illustrations and Tables. All figures (photographs, graphs or diagrams) and tables should be cited in the text, and each numbered consecutively throughout. Lowercase letters (a, b etc.) should be used to identify figure parts.

Figure legends must be brief, self-sufficient explanations of the illustrations. The legends should be placed at the end of the text.

Tables should have a title and a legend explaining any abbreviation used in that table. Footnotes to tables should be indicated by superscript lower-case letters (or asterisks for significance values and other statistical data).

4. Technical instructions for preparing your manuscript

The electronic version of the accepted article should include the original source (including all style files and figures) and a PDF version of the compiled submission. It is essential that electronic source version and readable (PDF) version are identical.

Authors who prepare their papers with LaTeX are encouraged to use Springer’s general LaTeX macro package.

5. Proofreading

Authors should make their proof corrections on a printout of the pdf file or use the online correction facilities provided with the proof. They should check that the text is complete and that all figures and tables are included. The author is entitled to formal corrections only. Substantial changes in content, e.g. new results, corrected values, title and authorship, are not allowed without the approval of the responsible editor. In such a case please contact the Editorial Office before returning the proofs to the publisher. After online publication, further changes can only be made in the form of an Erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article.

6. Offprints

Thirty (30) offprints of each contribution are supplied free of charge. If you wish to order additional offprints please return the order form with the corrected proofs. One complimentary copy of the concerning issue is supplied for each author.

7. Open Choice Publication

In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular 'subscription-based' article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springer's online platform SpringerLink. To publish via Springer Open Choice, upon acceptance please visit springer.com/openchoice to complete the relevant order form and provide the required payment information. Payment must be received in full before publication or articles will be published as regular subscription-model articles. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles.
